Enfield Lock

Location

Enfield Lock is to the east of Enfield Town in North London and is easily accessible by road (Ordnance Road) off Mollison Avenue which is part of the north-south route between Waltham Cross and Tottenham. There is a small car park just to the left as you turn off Mallison Avenue opposite the public house. For those without a car there is a regular Route 121 bus service to Enfield Island. You should alight at the Greyhound P. H. just before the Island bridge.

Description

The Lee Navigation at Enfield is very canalised with an average depth of 6 feet in the centre channel. In partnership with the Environment Agency fish refuges have been installed from the 'boom' area down to Enfield Lock. These refuges have growing weeds and under the water metal cages to allow fish to swim but preventing cormorants predating on the fish.

The boom area at Enfield below Rammey Marsh Lock

This section has a good stock of roach, perch, bream, skimmers and carp and is one of our more popular match venues. There is room for 90 anglers. Hemp and breadpunch are excellent summer baits for the roach in this section whilst bread-punch dominates in the winter. There are some really beefy perch up to 3 lbs in this section, especially in the Rammey Lock Cut that will normally respond to chopped worm. In addition to these there are some good sized tench that tend to feed along the bottom of the far shelf. Bream to 6lbs are regularly taken on the feeder or long pole. Recently stocked chublet are showing up to 12 ozs and bleak have also made a return.

Carp were heavily stocked in this section some years ago and those remaining are well into double figures. In the summer they will be found along the moored boats below Rammey Marsh Lock down to the end of the boom. Evening fishing with floating baits will account for these fish but conventional carp tactics are also rewarded.

Below Enfield is also a popular area with the lock cutting best in winter. The Swan & Pike Pool can hold fish when there is sufficient depth. The area opposite the British Waterways depot is noted for winter roach and skimmers to breadpunch. There is a very large shoal of big bream resident at the mouth of the Turkey Brook that can regularly be seen sunning themselves in the summer. Downstream of this the river holds roach, bream and carp but it is hardly fished. There is a footbridge over Mossup Creek and the navigation towing path with access behind Makro's off Mollison Avenue. The canopy area holds shoals of bream and carp that never really get fished for.

BE AWARE OF LOW CABLES IN THIS AREA. PLEASE DO NOT FISH UNDER THEM.

Section Tips

  • The most popular section of the River Lee is the high bank alongside South Ordnance Road.
  • From Rammey Marsh Lock to the end of the boom holds many big carp that you can target by roving the bank.
  • There are some large bream resident in the wide 'boom' section just below the Rammey Lock cut.
  • Roach and skimmers fishing has to be delicate with pinkies, maggots, hemp and breadpunch being the best baits.
  • One of the best areas for big perch is along the boats in the Rammey Lock cut.
  • The bream shoal at Turkey Brook are best tempted by loose feeding casters.
  • The section below Enfield is good for Pike in winter and some are very large.
